Lüneburg
Lively university city with the charm of century-old houses
Lüneburg, the heath's namesake, is a lively university town. Its youthful grace and vitality enhance the quaint charm of old streets in an appealing combination. A thriving salt supplier in the days of the Hanseatic League, it has magnificent churches, Gothic brick facades, idyllic alleyways, fountains and squares. The "Alte Handwerkerstrasse", where the craftsmen had their shops, takes you back to the Middle Ages. Every year in September the historic old town center turns into a bustling medieval town with juggling, crafts and old craftspeople's traditions. In October the three-day Sülfmeister Fair, with its focus on the town's salt heritage, tradition and present day merge into a unique and joyous spectacle.
